Gunmen have on Tuesday morning attacked a police station in central Somali town of Beledweyn, according to Abdi Farah Laqanyo, the commissioner of Hiran region.

An armed militia are said to have blown up the gates of the police station with a car bomb before opening fire at the police forces.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility of the attack to Reuters.

"We attacked the Baldweyne police station and killed many Somali police and Djiboutians,” Al Shabaab’s military spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters.

At least 22 people have been confirmed to have died in the attack.

The commissioner of Hiran region told Bar-kulan that the local authorities are currently carrying out rescue operations at the scene.

This is the second attack in Beledweyn carried out by Al Shabaab fighters following last month’s attack targeting Ethiopian and Djibouti forces in a restaurant, killing 16 people.
